I want to use it on a knitting chart with symbols rather than letters.

Advantages: It makes the symbols big enough and separates it from the rest of the chart enough that I don't lose my place as easily. The red line helps mark the line I'm working on.

Disadvantages: 2x magnification is just about not enough. The uppermost and lowermost edge of the magnification area distorts the top and bottom of the symbols. If I center the row in the magnification area, it is better, but the red line gets in the way of reading it.
