Department 56 is best know for their collectible ceramic villages. While it has seen better times, Department 56 still maintains a solid base of loyal collectors, which it adds to every year.
It all began in 1976, when Department 56 created "Snow Village". The original collection consisted of six pieces, including: Mountain Lodge, Gabled Cottage, The Inn and three others. In 1984, Department 56 started their most successful collection, Dicken's Village. The Dicken's Villages collection was modeled to depict the life of Charles Dickens and the stories he wrote.
Department 56 continued to expand it collection of villages in 1986 with "New England Village" and "Alpine Village". A year later "Christmas in the City" was born. Then in 1990 the magical "North Pole" series was established.
When December roles around, almost everyone starts decorating and planning for one of the greatest times of the year. For many this includes time with family members and good friends. With today's fast paced, highly technological world many of our past-times have started to be forgotten. Department 56 does an excellent job of bringing back those memories along with creating the magical fantasy world of the "North Pole". While there are other ceramic village series's on the market, none can match the variety and quality depicted in the scenes created by Department 56. Once you start, it's hard to not want to continue to collect!
At Hard To Find Items, we used to stock all the villages, but found demand too hard to predict. Therefore, we have shifted our model to just offering Department 56 Accessories. No matter how large or small your collection is you are bound to always need some type of general village accessory to round out your collection!
